Caldwell County has a very rich musical heritage and several concerts and performances are held throughout the year at the former Lenoir High School Auditorium. There are two high schools, West Caldwell and Hibriten, as the two major public high schools in the area. The largest public elementary schools in Lenoir include Gamewell, Davenport, Lower Creek, Happy Valley, Whitnel Four Seasons, Oak Hill, Kings Creek and West Lenoir elementary schools. Gamewell Middle and William Lenoir Middle are the largest schools serving students grades six through eight. The most notable university in the area is Appalachian State University, which is 25 miles from Lenoir. Other academic institutions in the area include UNC-Charlotte, Wake Forest University, Gardner-Webb University and Winthrop University. Lenoir-Rhyne College and Catawba Valley Community College are located in the neighboring city of Hickory.

Conveniently and centrally located, living in Lenoir puts residents within a short drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway where they can explore the Appalachian Trail or enjoy some of the state’s finest ski and summer resorts. The Parkway also offers a straight drive to the metropolitan city of Charlotte, which is the state’s largest city.
